Bus driver Paterson (Adam Driver) lives an uneventful lifewith his quirky wife Laura (Golshifteh Farahani) and their pet English bulldog Marvinin Paterson, New Jersey –largely known as the setting for William Carlos Williams’ epic poem. Paterson himself is an amateur poet, who takes inspiration from the small details of his daily routines to write verse in the notebook that he always carries. Driver is perfectly cast as the unassuming, thoughtful and unpretentious titular character, and director Jarmusch uses the actor’s pitch-perfect embodiment of the artist as an everyman figure to maximum effect. His film
is a charming, gently humourous and rewarding celebration of the normal rhythms of life and how even the most mundane things can inspire creativity.
